Conservation
Most master-planned communities are designed to include natural elements throughout it. Although open space, mature trees, and trails are meant to be an amenity to its residents, sustainability is also an important factor in a community's overall design. A community cannot grow and thrive without sustainable elements.
Bioretention is a term for the use of natural vegetation and soil to filter storm water runoff. Bioretention allows rain water to soak back into the soil instead of typical storm sewers where pollutants can find there way into streams and waterways.
Deer Creek will incorporate bioswales to maintain storm runoff. Not only does Deer Creek include these structures in its design, but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources awarded Deer Creek a cost-share grant for the creation of bioswales.
Bioswales use soil and natural grasses to filter runoff and add beauty to the community. These dry swales will be constructed within the boulevard that serves as the connector street to Deer Creek.
